Derek, a native of Hong Kong, immigrated to Canada in 1972. He studied at the University of Manitoba and later relocated to Ontario to pursue his career.

Derek, known for his community-minded nature, has been remarkably generous with his time, engaging in community service while also establishing a successful real estate and financial consultancy. The following are some notable civic contributions he has made over the years:

  • Director of the University Settlement House: An organization dedicated to assisting new immigrants in Toronto.
  • Founder and Chair of the 128th co-ed Scout Group of Canada, where he also mentors boys and girls aged 6-16, acting as a role model for them to emulate.
  • Parent council member of both the Toronto and York Region District School Boards.
  • Member of the Richmond Hill Bayview Hill Ratepayers Association.
  • Member of the Chinese-Canadian Civic Alliance.
  • Member of the Toronto Real Estate Board.

Recently, Derek founded and currently serves as the Chair of the Canadian Informed Voters Association (CIVA), an organization aimed at raising awareness among voters about their civic rights and obligations. Additionally, he has been serving as the Vice Chair of the Foundation to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers In Canada (FCCRWC) since 1993.
