Annual Chinese Railroad Workers Wreath-Laying Ceremony

About the Event

In the 1880s, 17,000 Chinese pioneers from Guangdong Province, China, came to Canada and played a crucial role in constructing the Canadian Pacific Railway, the first transcontinental railroad. Tragically, 4,000 Chinese railroad workers lost their lives due to unsafe working conditions, landslides, and premature dynamite blasts. Since 1989, the Foundation to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada has held an annual memorial wreath-laying ceremony at the downtown monument to honour and pay tribute to them.

The Foundation to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada will continue to encourage organizations to lay a wreath at the monument (located in Northern Linear Park, 4 Blue Jays Way, Toronto, Ontario, M5V 1J1) in memory of the Chinese Railroad Workers. You are also welcome to lay a bouquet or other offering as may be your tradition in paying respect to those who are deceased.

Wreaths can be ordered from Win’s Flowers, Tel. 416-340-2616, located at 564 Dundas St. W. Toronto, Ontario, M5T 1H5, Online at https://www.winsflowerstoronto.com/ or Email winsflower@hotmail.com. Wreaths will have blessings written in Chinese or English on ribbon for the Railroad Workers and will be delivered to the monument on the morning of the ceremony on July 1st.
